Oh-my-ha: Road Trip - Day 1

We ended up leaving town at 6 yesterday. A bit late, but we were on our way. We took the scenic route out of MN - aka the long way. But we did see something different and that's what road trips are all about. We hit Worthington at about 10pm and memories were flooding back to when we'd drive down to see my Great Grandma in Sibley, IA. Granted I hadn't been down that way in years - but it hadn't changed much. It was too bad we were driving through at night. I would have liked to try to find their little house. I knew I'd definietly have NO luck at night. Maybe on our way home - we'll see.

So back to the road...entering Iowa. The only guarantee of driving through IA is smelling bovine & skunk. If you aren't smelling 1, you are definitely smelling the other. We made it to Council Bluffs by 12:45 and I had showered and was sleeping by 1:05. Let's just say that when I 1st saw the signs for Omaha (just across the river from Council Bluffs), I was thinking "Oh-My ***". It was pretty dead.

What is it with maps. I can look at an atlas for hours. We did take the long and definitely dreaded drive through Nebraska today - currently we are in eastern Colorado and we'll hit Fort Collins tonight. I love wi-fi and laptops. Technology rules. Anyway, back to the maps & Nebraska. Cliffy factoid - Did you know: there is a river in NE called DISMAL in the county of HOOKER? hehehe - I like that one.

It is flat here. And I mean flat. Not quite like Fargo where you can see the curve of the earth, but when you're at the top of a hill, you can see for miles and miles and miles and miles...just like the song. I had forgotten about CO's oil wells. They're here and spread out. Since I've been here last they've also added windmills - YEA!

Oops! In a small valley en route, I lost all reception. So now it's closing in on my bedtime here in Fort Collins. We made it to the pretty mountains! And let me just say - the small-ish mountains we see here are MOST welcome and beautiful. Tomorrow's drive through the Rockies will be even more-so, I'm certain.
